Blown bitumen grades or Oxidized Bitumen (also called hard bitumen) are produced by passing air through the Petroleum Bitumen grades using additives and materials such as Gilsonite. During this process bitumen acquires rubbery properties higher than its original formula and they are simply harder bitumen. Oxidized Bitumen comes in several grades with different penetration and softening points according to the application, such as Oxidized Bitumen 115/15 bitumen widely used in African countries.

Hard bitumen under controlled temperature conditions is widely used as an anti-slip layer compound in the piling industry, roofing felts, waterproofing industries and sound dampening felts. The product is utilized under carriage sealant in the automotive industry, electric cable joint protection, joint filling compound, sealant compound and many others. Oxidized Bitumen is also applied in sealing saw cuts and joints where expected movements are minimum.

While a major application is also Bitumen Shingles, in the oil industry, blown bitumen is also used in the manufacturing of bituminous marine mastic for the oil & gas pipeline joints.
